Is couples therapy right for you?

Many couples will seek therapy when it feels like a rift has developed in their relationship. This may stem from a breach of trust, such as one partner seeking extramarital relationships. Alternatively, there may simply be communication issues leading to more frequent arguments, financial strain, or devastating life events that have caused difficulties at home. For example, many couples will have difficulty moving forward after one partner loses a parent or close relative.

It is a common misconception that relationship therapy signals the end of a relationship or is only appropriate when considering separation. Many couples can benefit from seeing a psychiatrist. However, it is important for both partners to be willing to dedicate the time and effort to therapy and the work required between sessions.

What happens in relationship therapy?

During couples therapy, there will be less focus placed on individual mental health with more of an emphasis on the relationship as the subject. However, when there are mental health factors involved, such as depression or anxiety, these issues may be addressed with solution-based strategies to utilize at home.

With Dr. DiPierdomenico, couples will begin their therapy with a 90-minute initial evaluation. During this time, Dr. DiPierdomenico will assess the specific problems that are coming up in your relationship. Then, she will establish a clear timeline for solution-focused and change-oriented strategies. Following this initial visit, couples can expect 1-hour follow-up sessions.
